An inspired & joyful synthesis of acoustic, electronic and field recordings. Released October 2009 as part of the POWWOW new music series.

AFXJIM is the work of multi-instrumentalist , a member of Sydney-based sound junkies Founder and folk-rock terrorists The Woods Themselves. Blackout Music – his debut album and the eighth release in Feral Media’s POWWOW series, combines a kaleidoscope spread of instruments and found sound. Musical influences include Mice Parade, David Pajo, Susumu Yakoto, Manitoba, Tortoise, Labradford and Fourtet.

Melodic loops, guitars and synths collide and collude with drum machines, glocks and percussion, the songs littered with scratchy samples borrowed from children’s stories, vocal jazz records, Hungarian composers, police radio scanners and the arguments of strangers.

The result is a warmly inviting mix of folk, rock, ambient and electronica, underpinned by an instinctive post-rock ascendency.

Over the duration of the album’s recording AFXJIM undertook an embarrassment of live and recording duties with several other bands (El Mopa, Kid Cornered, Sounds Like Sunset, The Morning Papers, The Bonnettes, Matt BcBeath), playing guitar, drums, percusssion, keyboards and horns as the occasion called. This – along with his regular duties in Founder and The Woods Themselves – at least partly accounts for the 4 year recording and mixing process.

Blackout Music was recorded mostly in the inner-west Sydney home of AFXJIM himself and partly on the NSW south coast with producer Tone Dupe (Holly Throsby, Jack Ladder, Saddleback) and embraces the contributions of musical allies past and present. Mastered by Casey Rice in his Melbourne studio.
